Think-Opposite… STOP and think the opposite.

Simple enough, right? But we NEVER think to do it.

As Patanjali says in the Yoga Sutra, “Vitarka Badhane Pratipaksha Bhavanam” – when disturbed by disturbing thoughts, stop and think the opposite. 

Everything is energy and where you put your energy is what you will get MORE of so it stands to reason that dwelling in negativity will NEVER bring about the positive outcome you desire.

Buying into a thought makes it REAL for you. So, if you do not want that thought in your life, DO NOT give it any attention. Simple as that. Thoughts are what create our reality. 

If you focus on what is upsetting you, you will only continue to perpetuate the upset. If you can learn to cultivate the opposite, you can create a much better reality for yourself as your thoughts always set you up for your next experience.

Life is a game and you are in control of your next move. Life is too short to perpetuate situations that do not work for you. So when disturbed by disturbing thoughts, stop and think the opposite. When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at will naturally change. A lifetime of happy thoughts and experiences await you. What are you waiting for?

Our life lessons are grouped. It is rare that you will be dealt just ONE lesson, they usually travel in packs. It is best to be prepared for them.

It is also important to realize that you are not being punished and that you are not a victim of them. You are in fact, in total control of how you get those lessons (or if you get them at all.)

Say you are in an important lesson-learning phase of your life to learn one major lesson (e.g. self-esteem) and you have 10 tests coming up to deliver that lesson to you. Your testing period could last as little as 3 months or as long as 10 years. You are in control of how quickly you get that lesson. Every time you get hit with the lesson, if you can pick yourself up and identify the lesson, then you will have “won” that round. Then the universe serves up the next test to you to see if you get that one. All the tests support the same lesson so it gets easier to see. The quicker you get the lesson, the quicker you get dealt the next test and ultimately the quicker you work through all tests. When you finish the tests, you have truly gotten the lesson and the lesson STOPS. You are free.

Now if you choose to NOT get the lesson and just feel sorry for yourself and play the victim, then the universe will hold off dishing you up the next test because it waits for you to be “relatively” ready for it. In your attempt to be happy, you keep yourself in a space of non-learning which feels like an unhappy, stagnant and frustrating space where nothing new happens. Maybe you have been there before?

When it rains, it pours. Let it pour down on you. Grow through those tests and get that lesson. Tell the universe to give you its best shot. If you are smart, you will NOT stay inside to avoid the rain, you will get a great umbrella and learn to dance your way through the rain. Life continues and the storms will get easier with each lesson learned. Are you ready to get wet?

Sisyphean toil… learn to lighten your load.

Not every issue has direct relevance on your life. Yet as humans, we tend to carry every burden on our shoulders as if it was our own. Maybe we are empathetic, maybe we are sensitive to other’s plights, maybe we are just kind people – whatever the excuse, we do not need to carry others’ issues, struggles or negative behaviors upon our shoulders. Life gets much simpler and easier when we learn to own what is ours and give the rest back.

Your work in life is to get yourself to the “top of the mountain” with as much ease and enjoyment as possible. You cannot get to the top of the mountain with ease if you are carrying bags upon bags of other people’s traumas and opinions and judgments. In order to succeed in your own life, you have only to carry what you need in order to make yourself happy. When you have what you need, you have enough to share with others, but when your bags are full of what isn’t serving you, you take yourself down, exhaust yourself and leave yourself feeling hopeless and filled with despair.

Decide today that you are not going to hold onto anything in life that doesn’t serve you – whether it may be a certain person or other’s opinions of you, or other’s dysfunction with themselves or with their peers, etc… Whatever drama or nonsense is going on around you, learn to let it pass through you. Don’t pack it up and take it up the mountain with you. If the situation doesn’t have a direct bearring on your life in a POSITIVE WAY, learn to not take it on as yours. The work in life is in learning to streamline your baggage, not in carrying everyone else’s up the mountain. Carrying other’s burdens does not make you the superhero, it makes you the fool. Afterall, your carrying their baggage doesn’t help them learn their lessons and by doing so, you have just made life harder for yourself. Who wins here? No one.

Give your back a rest. Give others their own baggage to carry up the mountain. Everyone will get there in their own time and with their own learnings and comfort level. Let the journey to the top begin.
